"fantastic in every way
This was our first visit to Garth Cottage. What a super place, home from home. Rooms were spotless, breakfasts always excellent and tea and cakes served every afternoon…nothing was too much trouble. A special thank you to Mark, Val and his lovely father for making our stay so memorable. We will be returning to this beautiful Cottage overlooking the river Wye very soon."

"Saved the Day
We were originally booked into the Royal Lodge Hotel, so we thought, but our reservation was lost somewhere in Cyber Space!! This beautifully located small Guest House came to our rescue, and what a rescue!! Put us up at very short notice as if they had been doing it all their lives, and made our stay most memorable. The location is probably one of the best on the River Wye at Symonds Yat East, with superb views both up and down the river, with the added bonus of the evening sun. Can only but reiterate previous comments, five star service, and most excellent G&T's on the terrace. Thank you Mark and Val, we WILL return."

"Wonderful experience all round
Our 2 night stay here was the best B & B experience ever! We are in our 70s and over the years, have seen the good, the bad and the downright ugly - but Mark & Val set a standard for others to aim for. The food, which is of the highest quality is sourced from local suppliers - the seafood in particular is exceptional including the Smoked Haddock for breakfast! Mark is an experienced chef, and it showed in the respectful way in which he treated the ingredients."

"A Little Gem!!
We were greeted at 10.00am by our host Mark who kindly offered us a nice cup of coffee on arrival. Then off to canoe down the River Wye for the rest of the day. Symonds Yat gets very busy at bank holidays and we were dismayed to find that many of the resturants and hotels were fully booked. No problem at Garth Cottage…Mark promptly sugested he could knock us up a dinner consisting of a smoked salmon starter followed by duck breast in a port sauce with shallotts! Where else would you be offered that at such short notice? It was absolutely delicious! Very nice room for the overnight stay (an olde worlde kind of a feel but VERY clean and well presented) followed by a superb cooked breakfast with all the trimmings. It scored 10/10 on my scale for taste and what I really liked was everything on the plate was piping hot! This was our first visit to Garth Cottage having stayed previously in the other hotels and inns nearby but this has, as the title suggests, proved to be a real gem of a find. Highly recommended to all….the family that run this place are excellent hosts."

"Just had to come back
Yes we came to Garth cottage last year, 2012. Enjoyed it so much we just had to come back. This time we took our 23yr old daughter with us and she fell in love with it all. Tucked away in the Forested of Dean offering Walking,Climbing. Canoeing and kayaking.
Garth cottage is right on the riverbank Mark, Val and Bertie worked endlessly to make our stay a relaxing one. Form just having a parking space ready for us right out side, a cup of tea and slice of cake before we were taken to our room. The rooms were very nice and clean and we had a room with seats and a table but we liked sitting on the verander watching the the world go by. Mark cooked an evening meal for us the night we arriver (Roast pork) I just gave him 24hours notice and my daughter said it was the best pork EVER. We had a afternoon out on the river Wye Canoeing now that's really good fun if you can stop the girls screaming… lol
As we were leaving make told me he has FISHING LICENCES so next time I'm taking some sort of fishing rod. Very very enjotable few day rest we'll be back rod in hand."

"A great place to stay.
We stayed for 3 nights at Garth Cottage and had a very comfortable break. All the rooms overlook the river and our room was very clean with a shower which was ideal for us. Mark welcomed us with tea and cake and we had a lovely meal the first evening along with super breakfasts. My favourite was scrambled eggs with smoked salmon (yummy!) We were able to sit in the lounge or conservatory overlooking the river as did the dining room. Thanks for a lovely stay, I'll bring some Staffordshire oatcakes for you if we come again!"

"Perfectly lovely
Stayed for 1 night at this b&b after visiting the passport office in grim Newport.. Knowing the area well I decided to head up Monmouth and symmonds yat. Booked into Garth and had the most lovely stay. Marks Mum and co. are so welcoming and a pot of tea and slice of cake were put on the table before you could blink. The room was immaculate with stunning view over the river. Mark cooked the must wonderful breakfast from a lovely variety on offer. He also does evening meal and my one regret is that I didn't book to have one.. He's a great chef great company with a great b&b.. Best wishes to you all for the season and to dad for good weather to continue his walks. From the Cornish contingent, julie and Christine."

"Fabulous Stay
We stayed here for 2 nights August 2012. Although the weather rained on arrival and for the rest of the day, we were greeted by Mark who after taking our bags to our room, served us afternoon tea. We had the best room, being room 2 which has a double view over the river wye. Mark is a great chef and we had a very nice evening meal and 2 fabulous cooked breakfasts on both mornings. The sun came out for our second day and after a lazy morning and on a very full stomach we headed off for a 9km canoe trip. 3 hours later we returned to afternoon tea on the patio. I would thoroughly recommend staying at Garth Cottage if you want to get away from it all and switch off."

Mark and Val make you feel so welcome and we love having a banter with Mark he is so funny. Room 2 is our favourite with duel aspect view of the river a huge bed and tea and coffee facilities etc. Everywhere is clean and tidy the food is all home cooked by Mark and is piping hot and very very tasty. The cosy restaurant has wonderful views over the river wye. All in all an excellent place to stay in a great location."

What a wonderful welcome we received from a genuinely warm and friendly family.
We had their very best room (Room 2) with double aspect windows to allow in lots of glorious views of the River. Their location is suberb with private parking; we couldn't hope for any better.
The cottage was exceptionally clean and had a warm homely feel to it.
Breakfast was superb. Really set us up for the day ahead.
We have already booked to stay again. Highly recommended."

"Stunning Location
Had a short stay here to enjoy the autumn colours in the Forest of Dean and I couldn't have picked a prettier place. The view from the bedroom window was just wonderful. A very homely guest house, lovely friendly hosts who gave lots of info about the local area. One thing I didn't pick up from the website info was that there is no tv in the room, quite unusual these days; there is a tv lounge that the info mentions. Not really a problem especially in the summer as most of the time would be spent outside looking at that stunning view. Very clean comfortable room with en-suite. Comfy bed, pillows were a bit lumpy though. Fabulous breakfast, fruit and freshly cooked eggs, bacon, the usual kind of thing. A very generous meal kept me going most of the day.
Garth Cottage might be a little old fashioned but if you want to be looked after well and have a spotless comfortable room with a view that would be hard to beat Garth Cottage will see you right."

"Excellent… Again!
Visited Garth Cottage again on my birthday this year and it was as friendly, clean and comfortable as it was last year when we visited.
The hospitality afforded by Mark, Val and Bertie is 1st Class and once again the freshly cooked food was excellent, eating breakfast and evening meal here twice, visiting a local pub on the remaining evening, which was nice but nowhere near as gorgeous as the food prepared by Mark at Garth Cottage, a must if you stay here.
Hope to visit again."

"Lovely B and B in a great location
Have just spent four nights at Garth Cottage and really enjoyed our stay there. We had prebooked a three course meal for our first night and having made Mark aware of our dietary requirements he produced a delicious meal which we both enjoyed, so much so that we booked a meal for our last evening too. Breakfast also delicious, perfectly poached eggs for me every morning (thanks Mark!) and everything else we could have wanted to eat was on offer. We were made very welcome by Mark and Val, our room was comfy and well equipped and we had a fantastic view as well. Lovely walks in the area and Hereford only half an hour away in the car if you like to shop! If we ever wanted to visit the area again we would definitely book at Garth Cottage."

"Lovely weekend break
We stayed at Garth Cottage at the end of September for 3 nights for my birthday weekend away. We were greeted by Mark, Val and Bertie with a welcoming cup of tea and our bags were carried to our clean, homely room with perfect views of the River.
Mark is a chef and we must say that the two evening meals that we ate at Garth Cottage were probably the best meals we have ever had the pleasure to eat. Beautiful homemade pate, steak in a gorgeous red wine and mushroon sauce to name one meal…wonderful! If you stay at Garth Cottage you really should try at least one meal in. Breakfasts fab too!
In an ideal position for walking, we walked to Monmouth and back one day, around 12 miles, went up to Yat Rock for breathtaking views and shopped in Hereford, where there are lots of shops.
Would we go back?……don't be silly, of course we will. Thank you for making our stay perfect. Sue & Kevin."

What a great 4 nights we have just had. From the greeting, being met at the private parking and helped with baggage, to the friendly approach given by Val Eden and her son Mark. This really is a gem of a b&b. The room was comfortable, the choice of food for the next days breakfast comprehensive, matched only by its taste. If you can plan an evening meal in advance then Mark will serve up one to savour.I was even offered the use of his garage to correct a fault on my classic car.Add this to being in probably the prettiest setting in arguably one of the finest areas we have visited, i can only say we'll be back."

We came with another couple who, like ourselves, were really impressed by both the location and the hospitality shown by the owners. From the private car park and lovely views to those amazing breakfasts, one could ask for nothing more.
We walked up to the Rock where the views are breath-taking and spent quite a lot of time exploring the tracks of the forests around and about.
Mark, Val and Bertie are most obliging and nothing is too much trouble. Mark's collection of model cars provoked lengthy discussions over the odd drink from the bar!"

"FANTASTIC HOSPITALITY!
What a find! Garth Cottage may not be the most up to date in Symonds Yat, but the hosts, Mark and Val more than make up for that in personality, hospitality and entertainment! A lovelier, more welcoming couple (mother and son) you couldn't wish to meet, and Mark was just born to the job. His attention to detail, friendly and helpful attitude and wealth of knowledge was incredible, and we can't wait to return! The food was wonderful, the views idyllic and the beds super comfy. There's even a little cosy bar to enjoy a drink or two in the evening. Get Mark on the subject of TV, films or cars and he's away! A brilliant couple of nights, so thank you to both him and Val for a wonderful end to our holiday. We'll be back!"

Also an added bonus is the availability of private secure parking, which is at a premium in this beautiful location."

"As good as it can get
Sheer bliss! We spent a long weekend here recently and plan to return again and again. The setting: simply a little corner of Heaven, overlooking the magnificent and serene River Wye. The property: comfortable and spotless. The Eden family: Val and Mark, the ultimate hosts. Attentive, professional, caring and very friendly. The food: the best breakfasts we have ever enjoyed anywhere, ever! The evening meals are superb too - Mark's roast duck with all the trimmings is hugely recommended. The location: Right next to a good pub which serves proper beer and where we enjoyed the magical Morris Dancers on Sunday afternoon. There are riverside walks where we hardly saw another soul and the boat trip was delightful. Symonds Yat is within easy striking distance of many other popular destinations - we enjoyed a day trip to the Abergavenny Food Festival - although it's so beautiful that you won't want to stray far. If you want to treat your partner, family or just yourself, there could be no better place to do it than Garth Cottage. Thank you Mark and Val! "Great Place
A lovely guest house in a lovely setting. Our room was large with a great view of the river (our host said all their rooms had river views). It had a good sized bathroom - no bath but a large shower. Everywhere was spotlessly clean. Unusually for now-a-days there was no TV in the room, though the downstairs lounge had a large flat screen which would suffice if you were desperate not to miss anything! Breakfast was cooked perfectly. Despite a time window of just 8:30 to 9:00, our host offered to make breakfast earlier if we wanted so it wasn't an issue. As to our hosts, they were most friendly, very chatty, very accommodating and helpful. Lovely people. All in all I can highly recommend staying here and fully expect to return someday myself"

"We didn't want to leave!
Garth cottage is so much more than your typical B&B. For me, a good B&B has to do two things well. The first being Bed and the second, of course Breakfast. The bed was deliciously comfortable with high quality mattress, duvet and sheets. The breakfasts were outstanding - some 5* London hotels would struggle to match the cooked breakfasts that Mark magically conjures up! So that's two big ticks right there, but what makes this place stand out by quite some margin is the hosts. We could not have possibly asked for anything more given a million years! The Eden family are unbelievably accommodating, generous, kind, incredibly interesting and a real pleasure to stay with. We felt as though we had known them for years! I can't even explain just how fabulous our 2 night stay was! We felt right at home which is why people choose a B&B over a hotel in the first place, but these guys are different beasts altogether! A huge thank you again to Mark, Val and Bertie. I can say with confidence that we will be back! We only got home yesterday and are already trying to make space in the diary for our next visit!!!!"

Just returned from a lovely 2 night stay celebrating our anniversary. We also ate there on the first night - the food was superb. The room was spotless with a lovely view out onto the river, and a huge comfy bed. This is a family run hotel and they make you feel very much at ease. Its also next door to the Saracens Head, a fantastic river front pub. My wife and I would strongly recommend staying at Garth Cottage - it's absolutely brilliant! :)"

"Great Place for a British Break
We stayed here for 2 nights and were happy to find free and spacious parking immediately on arrival. If you have not been to Symonds Yat - parking is at a premium and this B&B had more than enough space which was great. The Eden family were very welcoming and the accommodation was of a high standard. Breakfasts were fab with a great choice - even for vegetarians! Nothing was too much trouble - and you're made to feel like part of the family. There's even a small cosy bar for residents who fancy a night cap - which is far more reasonably priced than the local pub. Gorgeous views of the river in the day and beautiful starry skies at night - would definitely stay again"

We stayed at Garth Cottage for a few nights. It has a super location overlooking the river and valley as well as high rocks. Mike was most welcoming and offered tea and cake on arrival, there was also an option to book an evening meal. We found bedroom 2 was far more spacious than bedroom 5, and the larger room had two windows with river views. We also had dinner one evening, which was well presented and very tasty.
Numerous outdoor activities nearby as well as several places to eat. Sitting outside on the patio, with birthday cake provided by Mike was glorious"

"Service Perfection
This little B&B is perfectly located in Symonds Yat East with a wonderful river view and parking outside. If you require a flat screen tv in your room (or any tv for that matter) and the latest decorating fashions then this is not the place for you. But if you want great value, in a clean environment and with the most perfectly cooked breakfasts (plus great choice of fruit, cereals, alternatives) then here you go. On top of that you will get the most wonderful, personal service you could ask for from the friendly hosts, who went out of their way to assist when my wallet disappeared (only to be found the next day somewhat embarrassingly in a walking boot!) Lovely location, lovely people."

"Fantastic!
Very little to add to the other reviews about Garth Cottage other than to say we agree with all the positive comments. We spent a weekend here and were lucky enough to be in Room 2, which has a dual aspect of the River Wye (awesome views) and was very clean and comfortable. Mark and family were very friendly and welcoming for the duration, adding up to a very relaxing time. The whole experience had a charm and uniqueness which, as a family-run business, is simply impossible to emulate in a larger property. The breakfasts are also worth mentioning, we tried smoked haddock and full english, and both were superb!"

"English gem
Can't really add anything to previous reviews- it's all absolutely true! Mark and his mum Val made us really welcome, with a pot of tea on the outdoor terrace when we arrived. The room was really clean and well stocked with tea/coffee making making facilities and toiletries, and I had to tear myself away from the view to go downstairs and start exploring. The dining room has the same great view, but it's easy to forget it once you experience Mark's cooking. Poached haddock, kippers, eggs Benedict, smoked salmon on toasted English muffin…or a beautiful FRESHLY COOKED full English? Life can be so difficult! Mark also does evening meals with enough notice, and although we didn't have one they looked just as good. He also has a really well-stocked little bar-the cold lager was a real winner after a long walk on a hot day and it was great to be able to sit outside with it under the sun umbrella on the terrace watching the river go by. Would go back there like a shot. We found them by Googling 'Garth Cottage' & booked by e-mail, but you can phone too."

Fantastic few day at the end of August. Only booked the 3 nights the Friday before. Traveled down on the August bank holiday Monday. I looked out of the window it the river WYE and the view up the valley and stopped looking for faults just relaxed and totaly enjoyed the few day we stayed there. "A great find!
If you're looking for all mod cons, this is not the place for you. However, if you like good old fashioned homely hospitality with nothing too much trouble, this most definitely is the place for you. Mark and Val look after their guests like no other B&B I have stayed in.
As you walk in you are taking a step back in time into a large old country cottage with stunning views of Symonds Yat. You'll be offered a lovely cup of tea or coffee and cake. So, offer me cake and you've made a good impression, but I'm not THAT easily bought.
So, on to Room 2 which is the largest room with ensuite shower room. The room is clean, comfortable and has double aspect windows and although it was very hot while we were there, it was never too uncomfortable because you can ventilate the room as the windows can be opened very wide.
There is a large selection for breakfast and although we only partook of the cooked breakfast and toast (only, she said!) there are ample 'starters' to choose from too. As we wanted to be able to move for the rest of the day, we limited it to just toast and a cooked breakfast which was clearly made using quality ingredients. You order your breakfast the night before and Mark will cook it and have it ready for you when you get to the dining room. If I'd ordered all of the options for the cooked breakfast, I'd have needed two plates!!
Before booking at Garth Cottage, I read the reviews of the other few B&Bs and hotels in Symonds Yat and decided that if there was not a single bad review there must be something quite special about this place, and there is."

This is a really super B&B in a very pretty and peaceful hamlet on the banks of the river Wye. The views of the river & surrounding landscape from the room, breakfast room and terrace are wonderful. The Eden family are very welcoming and the breakfasts were delicious with a wide choice. "Wonderful overnight stay at Garth Cottage!
I booked Garth Cottage for a overnight stay for Saturday for me and my mum as we had a spa day booked on the Sunday. We wanted to stay on this strip but the Royal Lodge and Saracans Head were both fully booked but luckilly I came across this B&B who had availability. On arrival we were greeted by Mark and shown to our twin room (room 5) and offered tea and yummy Medeira cake! As it was such a beautiful hot day we sat out the front of the B&B overlooking the river for hours, we got very comfy and so couldn't move and became very lazy!! We chatted to Mark and his lovely parents until dinner time. Mark took our orders for breakfast and we chose exactly what we wanted. We took a stroll to the Royal Lodge for a drink and then drove into Monmouth for dinner. We arrived back at 11.30pm and again greeted by Mark who directed me into my car park space. Our room was lovely, clean and airy with a modern ensuite shower and toilet but the best part was the view! We could see up and down the river, was an excellent view. Breakfast was perfect, we had hashbrowns, toast, beans, scambled eggs, mushrooms, bacon and sausage, juice and tea. A very big thank you to Mark and his parents for our very relaxing stay, we were made to feel at home throughout and will definitely be recommending!"

Got a warm welcome from Mark and Val and a parking bay right out side. Given a cup of tea and a seat before being shown to the room. OK for all you that like to find DUST!! YES there was dust but I had to wet one finger and run it along the top of all the pictures in the room before I found one with a little dust on it. I looked out of the window it the river WYE and the view up the valley and stopped looking for faults just relaxed and totaly enjoyed the few day we stayed there. Mark and Val could not do enough to make us fIll welcome. giving us the low down on were to eat and the best walks. WE WILL BE BACK."

"Home from Home
My wife and I stayed at Garth Cottage for a couple of nights and really regret not booking it for longer, the owners could not be more accommodating. On our arrival we were warmly greeted and shown to our room that had a stunning view of the river, we were then offered tea a cake! A lovely touch and one I've not been offered at any other B&B before. The Guest house was beautiful, full of charm and really made you feel at home.
The breakfast was to die for, my wife and I both had the full English both mornings of our stay, why other B&B's offer such high quality food is beyond me. We booked dinner for our last night, Duck breast served with home made plum sauce and vegetables, again fabulous!
There is nothing I can say negative about Garth Cottage, it's number one on our visit again list. Thank you Mark and Val, we could not have wished for more."

"Great Few Days
We came with another couple who, like ourselves, were really impressed by both the location and the hospitality shown by the owners. From the private car park and lovely views to those amazing breakfasts, one could ask for nothing more.
We walked up to the Rock where the views are breath-taking and spent quite a lot of time exploring the tracks of the forests around and about.
Mark, Val and Bertie are most obliging and nothing is too much trouble. Mark's collection of model cars provoked lengthy discussions over the odd drink from the bar!"

"Our 40th Wedding Anniversary
My wife and I had a lovely 4 day break at Garth Cottage to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary. We had stayed here before so we new we this would be the perfect setting for this wonderful occasion. The room was lovely and the views are fantastic. Mark, Val and Bertie are so helpful and make you so welcome they become as much friends as hosts. Our evening meals were just perfect, compliments to Mark, a proper chef.
The full English breakfast is a must but if you can't manage this the haddock with poached eggs or the smoked salmon with scrambled eggs are both delicious.
Thanks for a lovely stay and we hope to be back later this year. Phil and Carole, Stoke on Trent."

My husband and I stayed here in September for a couple of nights. We were given a warm reception and a fantastic room overlooking the river. We would definitely stay here again, and give it a good recommendation."

A lovely location on the river Wye, we were greeted by Mark and immediately offerered tea and cake which was very welcome as the weather was cold, our room was clean and comfortable with a beautiful view of the river, we were offered an extensive choice for breakfast which was of a very good standard and very enjoyable. This place is not for you if you want all mod cons but if you want to relax and unwind in a lovely part of the world I would recommend staying here."

"Cosy B&B - Excellent Location
Just returned from a couple of days stay at Garth Cottage. Hubby and I stayed here about 2 years ago and always knew we would return. This time we took another couple. They had room 2, it's a corner room with great view both from the side and front, we had room 5 which again had a great view up and down the river.
We all really enjoyed our stay. Rooms are comfortably old fashioned. Clean and bright. Like others, and as before, we booked meals with Mark, the Chef. We had two lovely evening meals and our breakfasts were fantastic. Mark gives you choices and all you need to do is choose and say yes - I feel sure you'll be very pleased you did. Thanks once again to Mark and Val."

My wife and I have just enjoyed a lovely midweek break at Garth cottage. The view from our room was beautiful. The owners, Val and Bert and their son Mark realy made us welcome and were good company when ever they joined us for a chat on their balcony which overlooks the river. Mark keeps a good range of drinks in the cosy little bar and he cooks a lovely breakfast which kept us going for most of the day. There are some lovely walks along the river and very nice places to visit by car. Garth cottage is excellent value for money and we will definitely be returning in the future. "An real unspoilt treasure
I am a little reluctant to say exactly what I think about Garth Cottage for fear of it becoming too popular and me not being able to get a room there again!! As you can probably guess from the preamble, it is amazing. Such a quaint, homely and traditional B&B. Offering extremely clean & comfortable rooms (yes, we had Room 2, but I would have settled for any) with all the usual touches and some unexpected ones too (a handmade sewing kit was a lovely surprise).
We were immediately made to feel very welcome, with a pot of tea and slice of Bara Brith, and once we were recharged, set off to Symonds Yat rock a short, but very steep walk away… but well worth it (also accessible by car if you don't want to walk).
Symonds Yat East is a beautiful little place, very well positioned for the Forest of Dean and many other tourist attractions, but also the ideal place to kick back and relax.
Mark Eden, is a professional chef, and although we didn't have an evening meal they are available by arrangement. However the choice of breakfast was amazing, we had full English on the first morning and eggs benedict and smoked salmon & scrambled egg the next morning, all perfectly cooked and piping hot.
Mark, along with his mother & father Val & Bertie, run an extremely wonderful, friendly establishment… I cannot wait to return."

"Excellent… Again!
Visited Garth Cottage again on my birthday this year and it was as friendly, clean and comfortable as it was last year when we visited.
The hospitality afforded by Mark, Val and Bertie is 1st Class and once again the freshly cooked food was excellent, eating breakfast and evening meal here twice, visiting a local pub on the remaining evening, which was nice but nowhere near as gorgeous as the food prepared by Mark at Garths Cottage, a must if you stay here.
Hope to visit again."

"A blissful two days on the Wye
My wife and I spent three nights B & B in the lovely home of Val and Mark last week. It was a wonderful experience as we were made very welcome on arrival and spoilt throughout our stay.
Our bedroom with it's wonderful view across the Wye was idillic and so conducive to a real break from the tempo of life.
Mark, an experienced cook, gave us a delicious breakfast. Then we booked in for two evening meals when we both had the most delicious and perfectly cooked lamb shanks. The next evening I had a superb rib eye peppered steak.
We are, already, wondering when we can go and unwind there again.
We recommend this wonderful cottage to anyone, particularly those escaping the hubbub of daily life.

Mark, Val and Bert made mum and I feel very welcome for our 2 night stay at the end of September. The accomodation was spotless and very comfortable. Free parking was a welcome bonus. From our window we watched kingfishers having their breakfasts and mute swans winging their way up river - idyllic. Very peaceful, yet plenty to do during the day. The breakfasts were delicious local products, well cooked by Mark. I will being going back for a longer stay next year, as it is a superb place to unwind.

"The most fantastic hosts!
I didn't stay at Garth Cottage, but booked my older friend in last minute after a very chilly night at the neighbouring campsite and an unplanned dip in the river Wye after canoeing. The owners could not have be more accommodating and caring, fetching him a cup of tea and cake, turning the heating up and helping me and my friends keep an eye on him whilst he caught up on some much needed sleep. A well deserved but light hearted ticking off in the morning about camping in your 70s in the UK, in April, was much appreciated by me and my friend!! Thank you so much for helping us out and for being so kind."

"Enjoyable break, would go back
Rereading the reviews having now stayed here we can see what people have been on about. Without doubt the welcome couldn't be better. Mark was most helpful with our stuff. The cottage is very homely and is all spotlessly clean. It's position right by the river is really good. The food (we only had breakfasts) was fine. We felt some of the decor was a little old fashioned and the room was a touch on the small side but honestly we didn't spend enough time in the room to really worry about this and in any event the wonderful outlook up the valley more than made up for it. On the whole Garth Cottage is really good value for money and we would definitely stay there again."

The location right on the riverside is beautiful. Rooms are always spotlessly clean and nothing is too much trouble. Mark, Val and Bertie always make us feel like family! Reviewing Garth Cottage is rather difficult because, as they say, style is easy to spot but difficult to define. If you are a fashionista and are seeking chrome, glitz and modern facilities, you'll probably hate it. We had a wonderful stay there."

"Wonderful two night stay
We've just returned from a wonderful two night break at the most amazing B&B in Symonds Yat East. Our room, no 2, was perfect in every way- panoramic views of the river in two directions. We spent quality time on the two comfortable armchairs in the lovely, comfortable en suite bedroom. Val and Bertie, and son Mark were very welcoming and provided us with lovely bara brith and tea/coffee on arrival. We had a terrific meal on our first night, prepared to a very high standard by Mark, a professional chef. We were treated to pre dinner drinks to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary.
The breakfasts were excellent, prepared to order by Mark.
Symonds Yat East is an excellent centre for delightful country walks, either alongside the River Wye or up through the woods to Yat Rock with its spectacular views.
Thank you to the Eden family for helping to make this a most memorable stay, with the Wye valley in its Autumn glory.,"

"Rooms with a view and much more!
My wife and I have just returned from a short break in Garth Cottage, which is on the sunny side of the magnificent Wye Valley at Symond's Yat.
The business is run by Mark and his mum Val and together they provide the sort of old-school hospitality which seems to have gone out of fashion. Guests receive a warm welcome and are encouraged to mix with other guests in the old and unashamedly old-fashioned cottage. Be aware that techies may feel a bit out of touch here. There is wifi but it is very slow!
The rooms are clean, with large comfortable beds, tea and coffee-making facilities and all (most?) have magnificent views of the river. We spent a lot of time simply gazing through the windows and soaking up the views.
Mark puts on a very good breakfast, with a wide choice and generous portions. We also paid him to provide our evening meals. I would definitely recommend this. Mark is a trained chef and cooks with not a little panache!
Overall, thoroughly recommended. Excellent value, superb position (parking across the road) and charming hospitality. I have docked one star for the poor wifi but that may be my Yorkshire meanness!"

"Great weekend at Garth Cottage, Symonds Yat
Just returned from Symonds Yat, Herefordshire where we had a very relaxing weekend at Garth Cottage. This unassuming B&B is in just about the most picturesque location in the UK - it has views over the River Wye from bedrooms, dining room and lounge/relaxation area.
Breakfast was really excellent, it was really inexpensive, and it is walking distance from two excellent restaurants (Saracen's Head Inn and Royal Lodge). The most important attribute however, is the B&B's very friendly owners and hosts, the Eden Family.
We did a lovely walk along the banks of the Wye, walked up the Yat Rock, and on our last morning took a canoe out on the river for an hour - pure heaven."

We stayed for two nights in Room 3 and we were very impressed with our whole experience. The lovely seating area in front of the property allowed a great space to watch the world go by whilst enjoying a tipple from the nice bar that is definitely a bonus for a small B & B. Mark offers evening meals if booked in advance at very reasonable price and our meals were excellent. My husband and visited Symonds Yat for the first time this summer and decided to stay at Garth Cottage for two nights. We were welcomed by Mark with tea and biscuits and shown to our lovely room which had spectacular views up and down the river Wye, which runs right in front of the Cottage.
Our evening meal, which we booked in advance, was delicious and all home cooked by Mark!
Locality is ideal and the friendly family, who share their home with you, made our stay really enjoyable and relaxing.
Would highly recommend and go there again."

"Great B&B in a stunning location
Firstly, the location is awesome. Garth Cottage has a prime situation on the waterfront, in the unbelievably scenic Wye valley. Symonds Yat does get a bit over-run in the daytime, but once the crowds have gone, the tranquillity is breathtaking. It is very relaxing, just to sit and take in the river view, either from the bedroom window, or from the terrace below (preferably with glass in hand…). There are great walks (on the level, or uphill, as you prefer…) from the doorstep - or boat trips - or (with a little more effort) canoeing trips.
Secondly, the hospitality is immense. Mark takes justifiable pride in looking after his guests, with the maximum of attention, and minimum of fuss. Breakfasts were amazing (sorry I am repeating other reviewers here), huge choice, expertly prepared, and more than sustaining. The well-stocked bar was a delightful discovery. The welcome here is generous and genuine, and creates a real sense of relaxation and wellbeing. We had a truly relaxing (bank holiday) weekend here, and are more than happy to recommend."

"Such nice people
Mark and Val are the best of hosts. They are so eager to make your stay as pleasurable as possible and the rooms look out on such a beautiful setting. Life runs at such a more a sedate pace here but its quite evident the Eden family have put a lot of effort in behind the scenes. Their breakfasts could accommodate the most demanding of palates.
We picked the location purely for a means to get to the Malvern Autumn Show, but had we realised how lucky we had been with the accommodation and the location we would have booked a much longer break. Highly recommended!"

"Fantastic location on the banks of the Wye.
If you're visiting the Wye Valley this is the place to stay. Five minutes from the spectacular views at Symonds Yat Rock. Room 2 offers wonderful dual aspect views of the river. Friendly and welcoming hosts. The tea and cake on arrival were much appreciated. Chef Mark will cook you whatever you want for breakfast including eggs Benedict! Residents parking available.
The Saracens Head pub next door offers great food and a wide variety of wines, beers and cider."

"Fantastic
Had a last minute break with my fiancé at Garth Cottage 12th Sept, location was perfect, room was impeccably clean, views lovely, the hosts were very welcoming and friendly. There was more than enough choices for breakfast, went for the Full English, and it was delicious. We will be planning a trip back and would most definitely stay at Garth Cottage again, faultless."

"You can only enjoy staying here
We had the brilliant bank holiday heatwave here, which we chose from the reviews and were well pleased. We had the dual aspect room 2 so that we could enjoy the river views. The bed was comfortable and the shower was excellent and the whole atmosphere relaxing .Mark loves to surprise what he can do for breakfast with signature melon with fresh fruit garnish and anything you can think of with of course a proper full English. And fresh cafetière coffee. Symonds yat is crammed in holiday time but Mark has his own parking area which he is happy to let you use after you have checked outTheir patio has plenty of room and is above the street level so the river view is unimpeded.Wifi not tested and TV is communal lounge Definitely value for money"

What a wonderful B and B. Lovely hosts Val and Mark. Ask and if it's possible you will get it. The views from our bedroom were just magnificent also from the dining room and patio. Mark is the chef and the food is just wonderful if you don't try his food you will have missed out. We had a magical two nights their thank you both very much. Val did mention that they both probably need certifying. Not for a while yet we hope. Anne and Roy James"

"Super Find - Great location
Quality breakfast and a quiet immaculate room and personal attention.
If you have read my previous reviews you'll know we look for great value in interesting places and give an honest review so this is another gem.
This lovely English B&B is right in Symonds Yat East and has parking right out front. How often do you get greeted like an old friend returning to stay with the offer of a cup of tea and cake having only phoned them that morning.
The breakfast was notably great, fruit followed by a a full English which you chose the night before from Mark's long list of everything you can imagine. The sausage and bacon were proper butchers quality and served fresh from the kitchen. It could have been kippers or salmon & scrambled eggs on bagels. There was a healthy option of proper porridge with maple syrup or muesli.
They only have a maximum of 7 guests at any one time so it is personal service. Our room was absolutely spotless and looked out over the river. As its a old building, the room was maybe snug by modern hotel standards but you don't come to places like this for that. The bed was comfortable and the en-suite shower was strong and hot.
The WiFi worked fine but they don't have TVs in the rooms mainly because they don't get a great signal but there is a lounge if you really want to watch TV. Personally the view and talking with other guests was far more interesting.
There is a pub two doors up where you can eat but they are licensed so you can enjoy a drink sitting on terrace out front and watch the world go by.Mark kept a number of interesting beers and all the usual spirits.
Mark said they will do dinner with some notice and offered to do trout but we chose to eat out. Frankly I wish I had taken up the option based on just how good breakfast was. Maybe next time and if we are heading that way, there will be a next time."

"Late Booking
Fantastic few day at the end of August. Only booked the 3 nights the Friday before. Traveled down on the August bank holiday Monday.

"Brilliant B & B in a beautiful setting
Stayed here for 4 nights for the first time and would highly recommend it! Mark and his mother Val could not be more welcoming and friendly, nothing was too much trouble. Mark even helped my husband carry his fishing tackle down to the river bank and Val bandaged up his cut…"

"perfect b&b
We have just arrived home from a 3 night stay . We were a party of 2 couples from the warm welcome we received on arrival (tea & cake) to the friendly send off on our departure we could not fault our stay. The rooms were spotlessly clean with magnificent views of the River Wye from the windows. The Eden family were pleased to do anything possible to make our stay enjoyable. The lovely breakfast was cooked to order and was delicious as was the evening meal cooked for us by Mark on our second evening, even choosing our own menu. We will definitely be returning to this truly delightful B&B."

"Perfect hideaway!
The only way we can add to previous comments is to write another 5 star review! We came to Symond's Yat for a special anniversary break and found Garth Cottage to be the perfect hideaway. The views of the river from the comfortable bedroom were great and the village's cul-de-sac location added a special charm. Mark, Val and Bertie were all friendly, welcoming, and helpful but not intrusive - really perfect hosts.
Our locally-sourced breakfasts were superb, being plentiful and delicious, and the evening meal Mark prepared for our anniversary was just great. My wife thought that Mark's profiteroles were the best she'd ever had! Mark's mini-valet of my car was also much appreciated (and much needed!)
Symond's Yat (East) is an ideal location for visiting various places of interest in the area - Gloucester, Goodrich Castle, the Forest of Dean, Monmouth, etc, but is a welcoming retreat after a day's wandering. We made use of Mark's mini-bar & sun lounge but admittedly didn't try the neighbouring Saracen's Head. (Heard mixed reviews of this locally and didn't want to be disappointed.) We did, however, have an evening meal at the Cross Keys in nearby Goodrich and can thoroughly recommend this pub for its broad menu and huge portions of excellent food.
We will return! Thanks once again to the Eden family."

"Lovely Place to Stay
We stayed for two nights and thoroughly enjoyed the Eden family's hospitality. Wonderful views, great breakfasts (with an amazing choice), two days of total relaxation and all at a very reasonable price. Parking right outside below the terrace where you can sit and enjoy a drink and watch the swans go by. Nice walks and plenty of places to visit nearby. We would definitely stay here again."
